About
At age six Roni had the last-minute impulse to tell her father that she wanted a film camera instead of a Barbie doll. She doesn’t remember where the impulse came from, but she loved that camera until she got the next one. Roni spent her teenage years meticulously documenting cultural events, performances, and the lives of the people around her with her camera so that she wouldn’t forget a thing.
With almost ten years of experience as a queer event photographer and media designer specialising in Berlin's performance and queer subcultural spaces, Roni brings a unique set of skills and perspectives to the field. Having documented renowned theatres like Volksbühne am Rosa Luxemburg Platz, Gorki Theatre Berlin, Deutsches Theatre, and English Theatre Berlin, Roni honed an innate understanding of the theatrical craft and storytelling dynamics.
A little light is enough to make darkness go away, quoted Roni as an old and Goldie motto, and when you think about her body of work, colours (light) are primarily the way she sees things. When photographing Roni does not overthink, she just takes the picture, completely wrapped in the cosmic moment. This type of synesthesia by itself says a lot about how connected she is with her art and self-expression, so profoundly, that serves as an escape from the overwhelming reality. Through the lens she focuses on the moment, right in front of her eyes, and as a consequence helps the artist deal better with those real life issues, before intimidating.
A great chunk of Roni’s work, if not almost its entirety, is dedicated to the empowerment and highlighting of artists in a collaborative manner. It is always worth It to exchange, experiment and question standards and norms together over beautiful images. As for the means of doing it and making it work, amongst the photographer’s techniques are double exposure, colours - colours - colours, the paradox analog-digital fuse, many lights and the post-production most loved/hated by all, photoshop. And obviously last, but definitely not least ANALI GOLDBERG, the past, present, future and eternal muse of Roni Lugassi. Spectacular!
Furthermore, Roni also illustrates with vinyl designs for Candy Kingdom and event lead images. Having created album covers, Roni is adept at capturing the essence of music and live events visually.
This extensive background enables Roni to seamlessly blend media design and photography. Not just document events; create vivid visual narratives that celebrate the energy, authenticity, and vibrant diversity of Berlin's queer subculture.
